Vancouver, BC—In response to the rising popularity of birth photography a new Canadian directory lists more than 20 professionals across the country.
Launched in February birthphotographers.ca serves to connect expectant parents with birth photographers, to educate Canadians about birth photography, and to promote the industry.
"People have a misconception when they hear the term 'birth photography.' They think of graphic images but a professional tastefully captures the entire story of your child’s birth,” said directory co-founder and Abbotsford B.C. birth photographer Jaydene Freund.
Professionals focus on capturing the expressions and emotions of the entire birth experience. Common photos include:
- Dad supporting mom in labour
- Mom’s reaction to seeing her baby for the first time
- Dad cutting the cord
- Grandparent’s visiting
“Birth photography does so much more than create individual images; it tells a beautiful story of families being created and falling in love. Professional birth photographers tell these stories in a way that parents can look back on with amazement and wonder as they remember the day of their baby's birth,” said fellow directory co-founder and Vancouver B.C. birth photographer Morag Hastings.
All photographers listed in the directory have photographed a minimum of two births and are actively working. Hastings of appleblossomfamilies.com has photographed 70 births and Freund of cradledcreations.com has photographed 26 births.
Hiring a birth photographer can cost from $500-$1,200 and includes digital photos captured from active labour till two hours after the child is born.
Birthphotographers.ca is a growing community dedicated to connecting Canadian parents with professional birth photographers. The website also maintains a blog with helpful posts on how to choose a birth photographer and questions to ask potential photographers.
