Vancouver, BC— Traditional newborn photos are being replaced in family albums by the raw, real moments of birth.

New parents are often on a budget so when they have to choose between a newborn photographer or birth photographer, many are opting to put their money towards documenting their birth journey.

In response to parents looking to find a birth photographer, birthphotographers.ca lists 45 professional photographers specializing in birth photography across Canada. Directory co-founder Jaydene Freund of Cradled Creations Birth Photography says business is booming. “The first time people hear about birth photography, their reaction is to go “ewww.” They think birth is graphic, but it’s not. Their might be one crowning photo out of 200 photos taken that day. Once they see a birth story through a professional lens they want those photos in their own family albums.”

Vicki Middleton, of Abbotsford, BC hired a birth photographer with her first child and plans to hire one again to capture her second birth this summer. “I love looking through my birth photos from the day my son was born. It was all fuzzy in the moment so looking back and being able to see my husband’s first reactions to meeting our son, holding him, smelling him are priceless to me.”

Professionals focus on capturing the expressions and emotions of the entire birth experience. Common photos include:
  • Dad supporting mom in labour
  • Mom’s reaction to seeing her baby for the first time
  • Dad cutting the cord
  • Grandparent’s visiting
Hiring a birth photographer can cost from $500-$2,000 and includes digital photos captured from active labour till two hours after the child is born.

“It’s something special that I save up for over 9 months. We don’t get maternity or newborn photos and opt for birth photos instead,” says Middleton.

Birthphotographers.ca connects Canadian parents with professional birth photographers. The website also maintains a blog with helpful posts on how to choose a birth photographer.
